The Loading Dock Gallery

Western Avenue Studios

122 Western Avenue, Lowell, MA

This April, The Loading Dock Gallery proudly presents

Forms in Paradox, a collection of drawing, painting, and mixed media artwork by Nikki Giraffo. Explore the metaphors that Giraffo has chosen to represent the contradictions that occur in women’s lives as she draws you into her own nostalgic and dramatic world using images of struggle, search or discovery. Many of her stories unfold in an abandoned amusement park and Giraffo’s alter ego is often featured as the heroine of the story.

The carousel horse is a recurring character in Giraffo’s paintings and is a paradox similar to those that exist in the lives of women. Giraffo says "The Carousel Horse is an object used for amusement...very ornate and beautiful, however no one pays mind to the pole piercing its torso, the anger in its face, or the fact that it is stuck in this cyclical contraption."

Giraffo’s artwork shows how our own desires, struggles, and heroism come from within rather than through social conditioning. Through the process of creating artwork, she comes to better understand herself and her environment. Creating metaphors such as the carousel horse in a fictitious world gives her the opportunity to alter a reality in her artwork, a reality over which she has no control in real life.

Through collage, Giraffo is able to piece together, build up, break down, and create the characters featured in her reality. She also finds inspiration from "bright colors, interesting surface materials, personal family experiences, and the pure resilience of women." Giraffo is intentional in creating metaphors in her artwork, but ultimately she wants you to discover what the mystery in her artwork means to you.
